Open Grill 38

In this week's episode we talk about the AMD Thunderbird, the "opening" of the Playstation 2, and not much else. (except for the ever-impending Krull invasion) If you've got a high tolerance for pain, give it a listen.

  • Ok heres my conspericy for this week.
    (No new Slashdot radio?)

    Well I'm going to be simple on this one....
    In fact I stold it from Geeks 1

    Rob and Jeff are just robots programmed to take over the earth.
    Built by RMS and programmed by a crack team of programmers organised by Linus.
    Yes thats right Linux is accually designed to run Rob and Jeff and we all are tricked into writing and improving the code.
    When you send hardware to Rob and Jeff for demo (or when they buy it) they just add it to themselfs.

    Oh wait buit my conspericy dosn't stop with open source... ohhh no....
    You see Bill Gates is also trying to take over the world and so the open source communist conspericy must crush the Microsoft conspericy and visa versa.
    Now Bill Gates isn't an overlord type he is just folowing the plans layed out by IBM. But somehow things have gotten out of hand as IBM is no longer apart of that conspericy and Microsoft has no contact with it's former overloards. IBM was just a puppet.
    The Microsoft conspericy dates back even before IBM with the news media tyrents trying to take over. That failled.
    Now Microsoft is attempting to compleate it's world domination by buying into the news media and discover the rest of the original plan (they have compleated the part they know... and are looking for the rest of the plan)
    The media has long abandoned that plan and are considering joinning RMS and team in taking over the world.
    Ahh but the unknown original overlords are not with the news media anymore, not with open source and not with Microsoft.
    In fact we don't know where they might be.....
    That... is why open source hasn't launched it's final assult. RMS needs to know if there is any counterstrike waiting for him.

    In the mean time... some hacker is adding code.....

    while(brainwash == yes)
    {
    NullifyBrainwash;
    NewBranwash = "Burn Linux, Burn Microsoft, Folow the Krull";
    }
    }
  • I heard this yesterday thought I would share, not sure how long its been up as it has not been announced!

    What are you guys smoking? This is episode 3.1 (three point one). In other words, it's an addendum to Geeks In Space *3*, and was released July 29th of 1999.

  • it's time for a new one, guys!!
  • June 25 Food Network..

    An all new Iron Chef, yes this time there in america and they are chopping mad... they go against the food Networks resident nobody Bobby Flay from Hot off the Grill.

    Its two hours and lets face it, its gonna be very cool and perfect for anybody who doesn't really watch Iron Chef

    Hey wait could it be that this Iron Chef special is just a diversion tactic for the Krull invasion plan

    ok and for the conspiracy this week, I have a doozey... there is no Kurt. He is just a puppet name made up by Bates and Malda so they can gage who much control they have over the geeks that listen to Geeks in Space.. the more we send the more they get ready to offer us "special" versions of Debian that will include the mind altering install screen so that we will spend very minete of the day clicking on Slashdot Banners untill we waste away or the Krulls come and conquer us all.

    thank you for your time, and I think this is funny don't you moderators?

    Everything 2 may be weird, but at least it isn't um, a haven of your evil OREOLOGY [everything2.com]! (Quote from Rob when I confronted him on this vast conspiracy, "Shit, you're on to me.") Seriously though, can I help it if writeups like The Bondage Perils of Supergirl [everything2.com] get voted up to like +10 and get me 20xp? Well, then again, I am pretty much crazy [everything2.com] according to my fellow noders.

    Either way everything 2 isn't half as insane as slashdot, our flamewars are usually between liberals and conservatives! And the trolling is in voting so you don't have to read any of it because people are afaraid of losing xp! Muahaha.

    Concidently this is just one of many Krull Proofing Techniques used by everything2 [everything2.com]. We prevent Krull invasions thru many, very sophisticated Krull Proofing techniques. For instance, the vast majority of e2's buttons say 'Sumbit' instead of Submit. Also, in the event of lots of krulls invading, they'll get lost in the labrynth of nodes when we shut down the cool nodes, random nodes, soft links, search capability and new writeups. They'll just be trapped, then we pour creamy oreo goodness into the nodes. Unfortunately, a little known fact about krulls is that Oreo goodness [tm] clogs up the pores thru which they breathe the solar rays of the sun, brutally killing them, so if a few noders get caught in their SCUBA gear in a vast sea of Creamy Oreo Goodness, it's no big deal.

    As you can see, Everything 2, "Horny Teenagers" (Of which there are very few, I assure you.) and all, is the last line of defense against the evil, evil, evil, krull invasion force.

  • Unfortunatly, due to a bug in the above code, everyone will ectually start washing bran, while chanting "Burn Linux, Burn Microsoft, Follow the Krull". Someone did notice this bug, and submitted a patch, but 2.3.99 is in Feature Freeze, and it was decided to wait until 2.5.x to fix it. Thus, the Krull invasion must wait another two years.
  • I say next week we send Kurt e-mail informming him that Rob Malda on Geeks In Space each week asks us to e-mail him just to annoy him.

    I think he'll be better for the knowladge...

    I also recomend using 'leet speak or other mutations to thwart his procmail filters...
  • Did anyone catch it when one of the guys started singing "Life was fun, life was great, until I made my big mistake..." and no one else knew what the hell he was talking about. That's the beginning of the V-Femmes song Gone Out the Window. I just got giddy because I saw the Femmes last week in Santa Ana, CA and they sang this song. And then I hear it on GIS. Oh, such a small world.
  • Being dutch I have to differ with you on that. Brand, Grolsch (pre-disaster), US Heit, La Trappe and some others do the trick quite well
  • slashdot rocks! cmdrtaco rocks! open grill rocks!
  • Could someone explain this joke to me? It's been posted here every week for the last few weeks, I I'm starting to feel like an idiot for not getting it.
  • I'm prety sure he's figured it out already.
  • Okay, I'm a little freaked out. See, I just downloaded all of the GiS mp3s for my mp3 server here at work, and somehow I ended up with a geeks31.mp3. However, when I go back to thesync.com/geeks, I notice that the latest episode is #30, and I also have a geeks30.mp3. Can someone explain what's going on to me before my brain implodes?

    Pablo Nevares, "the freshmaker".
  • I just noticed that http://www.geeksinspace.com/ [geeksinspace.com] was actually registered. I highly doubt that anyone on the /. staff would actually host a page through Network Solutions. Does anyone know anything about this?
  • Anyone remember what the URL for the pornicator was, i gotta give that a try :)
  • Iron Chef French is Hiroyuki Sakai. Masahiko Kobe is known as the Bastard Child of the Iron Chefs....Iron Chef Italian (he doesn't even get to pop up with the other three guys). Learn, you Iron Chefs....

    Allez Cuisine!

  • Likely leagal reasons, plus I doubt they want to blast out their legal plan to microsoft via GiS. Besides, what would they talk about?
  • by FnH ( 137981 )
    Dutch beer sucks ... you should try Belgian beer. Maes Pils or Stella Artois. That's real beer, not some water-with-a-taste. FnH
  • It's the www.pornolize.com [pornolize.com].

  • why has the threat from microsoft to sue slashdot over the recent kerberos discussions been ignored on geeks in space?

    Rob says he neds to learn proc mail - Why doesn't he just ask Kurt? - After what we've done to Kurt, he must be some sort of consultant by now.

    And by the way - have you done your homework this week?
  • Hey! Don't knock banjos and electric guitars in the same song. Check out my favorite band [primussucks.com] PRIMUS!!!
  • by incast ( 121639 )
    Did Rob do the voices for warcraft? In the one part, he sounded a lot like the guy that does the intro voices for the Orc missions.
  • The DNS registration record was created on 11 May 1999, which was before the first Geeks in Space broadcast was released.

    Now the interesting thing is that my email shows that the name for the show was first decided on 4 May 1999, so maybe there was a "leak" ;)
  • So has everyone heard the Shashdot Emergancy Broadcast Addendum [199.34.53.69] ?

    The story about a young hacker gaining entry to the "linux underground", I heard this yesterday thought I would share, not sure how long its been up as it has not been announced!

  • Y'all referenced the length of time it took Lars to get back to you, but you haven't yet mentioned that Douglas Adams has yet to get back to us. The original request for questions went up May 2nd. That's 35 days ago. (Lars only took 22 days.) Have we heard anything from Mr Adams, or anyone in his organization, as to why the delay or when we might get answers?
  • I'm the guy that e-mailed CmdrTaco the penguin/calvin [geocities.com] spoof. In fact, I drew it right after I read that article on The Onion [theonion.com]. Evidently Rob thought my e-mail was my attempt at a serious political statement and not just the doodle it really is. It's okay...he didn't hurt my feelings that bad. I still love Geeks in Space. More jokes about Hemos's pants!

    Peace. Sway

  • I think it may have to do with the fact that GiS released a 'patch' to episode 3. I guess it was supposed to be episode 3.1 but the file name was geeks31.mp3, which would conflict with the next episode if they kept the naming scheme up (since the last one was episode 30).

    Then again, it may be that Hemos actually said that, and since the latest episode was episode 30, well, that would be that.

    And finally, it may have to do with that Bill Gates quote from like, 1983, where he said something like "64k ought to be enough for anybody", or something like that. The numbers may be wrong, but you get the idea...
  • "30 Episodes aughta be enough for anyone" - Jeff Bates, upon the release of episode 3a...

    I can't wait to see what the GiS crew does next week >:-)
    ---
  • I mentioned this earlier up, but geeks31.mp3 is really supposed to be episode 3.1, it's a patch to episode 3.
  • by Duxup ( 72775 )
    I thought Rob sounded like . . . Rob :-)
    Then again for all I know it was Hemos who sounded like Rob.
  • But where did i get it from?? =) I can't find a link anywhere.

    Pablo Nevares, "the freshmaker".
  • So why does he always win?

  • Stella Must be the worst beer in the world! I just neck down any generic Larger I can find.
  • Ya know, the more I listen to Cowboy Neal, the more I think he's really Tom Servo. That would explain why there are no pictures on Slashdot. How's Rob gonna explain the talking gumball machine?

    BTW, the Thunderbird didn't start to really suck until the '70s. I just hope old Fords aren't a trend for AMD. Granada, Maverick, and LTD II are not what I would consider confidence-inspiring. Maybe Cordoba. Yeah, it's a Chrysler name, but then they could get Ricardo Montalban to sing the praises of it's "rich Corinthian L2 cache."

  • Go to the GiS page, click on 'Past Shows', go to the bottom, click 'more geeks', on that page you'll see 'Episode 3.1: Test of the Slashdot Emergency Broadcast System This is a service patch for episode 3. 7/29/99'
