Geeks in Space: The Octagonal Mystery 19

Broadcasting from the bottom of the Med. Sea, and with special guest Roblimo, it's yet another fun-filled extravaganza. We talked about Karma, moderation, underwater telescopes, and what's going on in general. Grab it from The Sync.

Roblimo is cool, I wish he could hang out at the show every week.

Get Katz on at some point and take live calls. Then you'll be able to see if the Slashdot effect applies to the telephone system.

If it does, there may be an easy way to extend Slashdot to the public telephone network. Require users to touch-tone in their username and password when they first call in. If their karma is in the red, have the system emulate a Bell recording and say:

"<beep beep beep> We're sorry, your call could not be completed as dialed due to an Internal Server Error. Please contact the server administrator, malda@slashdot.org and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. - Apache/mod_telco 1.3.6 server at 616-555-1212"

Failing that, just have the system play a recording of Nelson Muntz from the Simpsons saying, "Ha ha!"

The system will then hang up and dial *60 to blackhole the user.

On the other hand, if the user's karma and logon data is good, the system can make an exception in the Caller ID database to allow the user through the next time without asking questions, thereby setting a "cookie" of sorts. (:

Moderators could be given access to flash the hook on any live calls, and meta-moderators can have the system flash the hook on the original moderator and call the caller back if the original moderator's moderation is shot down by the meta-moderators.

Jeez, boredom can be hell, can't it? :P

  • Hehe, can't wait till I get home so I can listen to it. The previous 9 have been great (listent to them 3 times so far).
  • Wouldn't know, I'm not home yet:( Soon, though. I just got this linux box setup at work and I can go home now (first post from this machine:). Hmm, wonder if I'll still be able to boot NT and W95. Oh, the joys of tripple booting.

I might have to see if I can get the real* stuff going.

  • At least I corrected Taco on "residuals" (The money you make when you are on TV when your show or movie is in syndication) on the skywalker ranch episode. Does this make me the first person with a correction?

  • Well, it seems that the server mp3-2.thesync.com [thesync.com] where the downloadable mp3 [thesync.com]s are availible from is down!

    Any suggestions?

  • Every time I hear these shows, I keep wondering "So, when do you guys get your TV show"??
It reminds me a lot of the feeling of listening to a good radio comedy show (Goons, "I'm sorry I'll read that again" and other such stuff).. Except there's loads of entertaining news too.. :)
Well worth the weekly wait for the next installment... :)
  • I see you've posted this yesterday, so try again today. This isn't a commerical enterprise, so don't expect commerical uptime. The T-1 get paid for some months, and sometimes it doesn't.

And trust me, I can relate.

  • Has anyone else noticed the fact that the ID3 tags on the Slashdot Shows really suck? The artist went from "The Sync" to "Slashdot" and there was one with no ID3 tag at all. Why is this?

PICK SOMETHING and STICK WITH IT!

Or just give us more shows, which would keep me from shouting into the vast unknown of cyberspace. :)
  • Frankly, I *had* to edit them. I'm just wondering why *they* didn't make a K00l naming scheme up *for* me.

I know how Tuesdays tend to be, I haven't made the last two meetings, and probably won't until the end of the academic semsester. Gimmie an e-mail address so I can subscribe you to the HRLUG list. Also, you might want to show up for the TWUUG meetings or the Penninsula Linux User's Group (PLUG) if you're anywhere near the Penninsula. TWUUG has damn fine meetings, with a full-blown conference room and projector for the advancement of Unix/Linux systems. Sometimes, you'll even see *real* UNIX boxen there. Sweet, eh?

I'm apoligize to the moderators for the offtopic text, but the poster of the last message didn't give me any kind of e-mail address to reach her at. Please guys, don't kill my karma.

  • You haven't missed anything. All of the shows are archived at The Sync's Slashdot Radio Archives [thesync.com]. They even have the 3.1 show (which makes some corrections to show #3). I can't begin to tell everyone how much MP3 radio makes my toes tingle. High quality, low file size, yummy.
  • There just isn't enough people commenting on GiS now that it's 'dissapeared' to a subpage. I miss the days where everyone would complain about how much it sucked.

It's really funny though :) Well, except for the bits that aren't.

    I am also bored. ;)

  • I am going to be selling all eight copies plus the 3.1 service pack on ebay. Look for it later today! Bidding will start at $40 per episode and $20 for the service pack.
  • Does anyone have an archive all 8 of the mp3s? I was skeptical at first if this 'radio' show was any good and now I don't miss an episode. I want to collect them all! ;)
  • Roblimo is cool, I wish he could hang out at the show every week.

Yah! Yah! It's cool just to get voices put to the names, but he also was fun to listen to.

I love listening to these shows... Keep it up! :-)

  • Thanks for the tip! I was unaware that there was a service pack for the 3rd show (er, something like that), so it was a new gem to listen to :-)

Keep up the good work, guys!

  • Edit 'em, then =)

(For that matter, move the HR-LUG meetings to Wednesdays, I can't make Tuesdays... :-/ )

  • Go get it!

(There was not yet an article announcing it as of when I wrote this. It discusses some pretty neat things, like GrandmaLinux, the Corel distro, IPv6, Google, The Matrix DVD, and the usual rambling commentary. And, of course, the special guest announced in this episode.)

    Go. Listen.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I am a sad fanboy of these shows...

  • Another great show. I have all the shows archived and in an mp3 playlist by themselves. The total air time so far is 1:46:44. I have listened to them all back to back. You can hear them getting better and better. Organization doesn't really matter if you have a decent show. Heck Howard Stern seems like the most unorganized show I've heard. SlashWorld Public Access Television would be cool. I hate the stupid computer geek show that comes on PBS on Sundays. It plain sux, and well the guys that do it have no clue. It would be cool to see you guys messing with the things we talk about on here. I don't know how long a download would be for something like this but I think it would be cool. Keep up the good work. It can only get better from here. Rock ON!
