Looking Beyond Hardware, Sonos Launches Its First Streaming Service (protocol.com) 9
Sonos launched its first audio service Tuesday, called Sonos Radio. It promises free and exclusive music programming across a few dozen stations. From a report: Many of these stations will be supported by advertising -- a new business for Sonos, which the company is entering at a time when the ad business is feeling the pressure of an evolving economic downturn. However, for Sonos, the radio service also represents a new opportunity to lean more heavily into product partnerships like its existing relationship with Ikea, and expand to new product categories, including automotive. As such, it's an interesting example for a consumer electronics company using services not only to generate revenue but also as a way to expand its core business.

As long as it doesn't have Ads I don't think most consumers care. On the other hand, if you're paying the Sonos tax for speakers, why would you want to listen to ad supported content when you can afford ad free content?

Go back to buying CDs, DVDs and Bluray disks. Escape the trap.
The old Sonos solution worked well with CDs. Rip them to a NAS. The Sonos would play them. No ads, no streaming over the internet, no recurring payments.
With ad supported streaming, it's no longer the nice product they are known for producing.

The current Sonos solution still works well with CDs and a NAS. We've got a decent selection of ripped music on a Synology NAS and it'll happily play that content on the Play:Ones we have dotted around the house with no ads, no streaming over the internet and no recurring payments.
And how is this better? (Score:2)
If it's not cheaper, I already have a streaming service for music. What is one more player in the market going to do that offers the exact same service? I don't want exclusive service.
You mean ShoutCAST? (Score:2)

Don't we already have Shat...err...Spotify for that?
