  • It would be nice if the "Sections" box on the left hand side of all /. pages could alert people to new items in these sections that aren't always on the mainpage. As the site continues to grow like wild, it makes sense to break articles up, but if people don't know there is new news then they're going to miss it.

It is a testament to this fact when an article that was posted early this morning gets its first post in the late afternoon. Especially when the other "Geeks in Space" articles have generated so much discussion.

  • are there only 2 people whe found it yet???
This definitely needs to go on the main page, because I never noticed the tiny "Radio" link on the side before.

Also, despite all the flames that previous shows have recieved, I like things like this that remind you there are real people behind cool web sites.
  • I agree that Geeks in Space should probably make it to the front page somehow -- I mean, this episode was great; I'm passing it around among friends as I type this, yet, they didn't know about it at all since it wasn't on the "front page". (And they're enjoying it a lot).

Geeks in Space is great, I think we can all agree with that.

Would it not be best, then, to have a seperate "topic" for the 'radio' section of slashdot? That way, people could filter it out if they don't care, and the people who want to grab it right away can.

I think it's pretty clear that most people just don't know about it so far -- this is the third post, and if I'm reading the date and time right, almost a day has gone by. Realistically, this thing should've had 100+ comments by now or something.

At any rate, keep up the great work, Rob + co. Maybe a positive side to this is that The Sync doesn't suffer from the slashdot effect whenever a new episode is posted ;)

  • how about either making a slashbox for it - or putting it in a larger section to the left, whith a blurb afterwards indicating what episode is out... left side is tight thought, right side slashbox with a run-down of latest available would be great...
anyone at thesynch do transscription? - i know i enjoy slashdot extreemly, am here all the time, and love geeks in space - but due to the nature of my temporary cube-dwelling life, speakers are a no-no... the systems Dont Even Have sound cards..
i could read transcriptions if they were available...
    hrm.
this hits on something else... MP3s can encode song titles and such... could a moded version of the format have the equive of a closed-captioning ability? thus, people without sound in thier hardware, or wetware, would be able to Read the lyrics of an MP3... also, since MP3 is actually an audio layer used in video encoding, media players could be created with a closed captioning ability automatically...
someone would still need to do the transcription... but why keep it seperate?
  • Slashers--
Geeks in Space #6 wasn't that bad. It's kind of a hack-job, late night movie, MST3K thing. I actually kind of like it and I've downloaded all the episodes to date (and got #6 when it came out). Why is it that Geeks In Space in no longer getting posted to the main page. Now I've gotta check the "radio" link once or twice a week. Very annoying. From all of Slashdot, we appriciate the work you do, Rob, and the show is bitchin'. I'm hooked.

  • Its not posted on the main page because people kept saying "Why are you posting this on the main page you asshole?" and "You said you wouldn't post this on the main page any more. Must be Andover you bunch of sell outs". Anyway, you guys are six out of six for great episodes. Keep up the good work. How about two per week? Maybe a daily show?
  • I did see this on the first day, and I did listen to it, I thought it was very good :-) However, I just didn't really have anything to say about it, that's all.

The only thing I have to say for Rob, et al is that you guys shouldn't choke this off--give yourselves time to grow an audience. The fact that this doesn't show up on the front page makes it hard to snag and comment on. A slashbox would be good, so would a separate topic for it. For comparison: the "Ask Slashdot" columns that don't get on the front page don't end up being very popular either--but people have learned to look, so they get a correspondingly bigger audience.

    Anyway, those are my thoughts.

    Yet another vote for continuation.

Once a week is fine, more is better -- but have a life and let them happen when they will, rather than forcing them out to deadlines.

More visibility on the front page, please. Anything from just showing which show number is available to an article post is fine for me.

  • You guys need to use a low-pass filter before your sound card. Since you sample at 24kSamples/sec, you need to block anything 12kHz and over, or else it aliases back into the spectrum and makes the signal sound terrible!

Either sample at a high rate and use sox to downsample it before encoding, or get a lowpass filter in front of the sound card. I'd recommend a 3kHz corner frequency and about 4 poles (a Sallen-Key filter would do nicely).

Other than that, I look forward to each episode. You need to do a JPEG or PNG of a movie-theater with the three of you in silhouette (a la MST3K).

  • I vote for the radio show as a topic (to be filtered in/out by interested/disinterested persons), although a SlashBox would also be cool. Silly me, I completely forgot to check for a new episode until today =(

I love the show. My wife doesn't "get it", but too bad =) More is naturally better, but only as long as it continues to be as fun to listen to as it is at present. It's like chatting with and listening to some of my geekier friends =)

I do have one question: Are the Myth II crashes mentioned by Hemos related to glibc+voodoo+pthreads? Or is it a different issue? Just curious, I just picked up a Voodoo3 for my brand-spanking-new box (which currently has Q1/Offering, Q2/Colossus, and Civ:CTP on it) and am probably going to get Myth2 soonest. Don't forget Fenris [lokigames.com] for Loki bug-tracking, and a newsgroup [lokigames.com].

(Not that anyone will see this -- it's a week after the episode, and it's really buried...)

  • Make it an opt-in SlashBox or, if possible, an opt-in only topic. Or something. I want something better than a link I keep forgetting to follow -- this is one of the things I enjoy listening to most (that, and new GAMH songs...).

I'd go for the twice-weekly show. I've enjoyed all six episodes immensely. If y'all don't feel you have enough material to manage that much, though, don't push it =)

  • Unfortunately we don't really have the person-power to transcribe shows, however if someone wants to do it, we'd be glad to put them up!
  • hhahaha. voodoo 3. ehhe.. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& item=156703037 -Warren
  • True, some people are going to miss the show for a few days because they forget to check the radio link, but the dicussion on this article has no trolls, no spammers, and no idiots posting just to see themselves post (maybe that's me...).

I normally have my threshold at a 2, but I lowered it all the way to read these comments, and I was pleasantly surprised to find all comments at a 1.

[nostagic] Kind of reminds me of the days when I could read /. with a threshold of 0... [/nostalgic]. Of course there's always a price to pay, namely, less people means a smaller pool of people from which to gather quality posts. I'm not complaining, though. All of the posts I've read so far have been quite good!

  • Well, it is.

As you will see, I told them, in no uncertain terms, to see Figure one. -- Dave "First Strike" Pare
